In Defense of “Scam Bloggers”

Posted on July 10, 2010 by Alpha Man

People don’t listen.  This point was so eloquently made a few weeks ago by my favorite DJ Roach in response to simultaneously getting alot of people asking questions he’d answered and people complaining that he sounded like a broken record. People don’t listen. Therefore people with a platform repeat themselves, no matter how high or low that platform happens to be.

Which brings me to “scambloggers.” I don’t like the term bit at least take comfort in the fact the movement has gained enough traction to have a derogatory name. Scambloggers suggest the bloggers are scamming people instead of trying to bring a scam to light. It would be like calling fire fighters “fire manipulators” or “fire handlers.” It sort of makes them sound like pyros, not the guys who clean-up their handiwork.

Next let’s be honest. Those who write these blogs have broken lives just like ex-convicts, gun victims and war vets who devote their lives to speaking out against drugs, easy access to guns and unjust or unwise wars. Is there a measure of personal responsibility here? Sure. Some people have grown up parentless in abject poverty and not sold drugs, chances are a decision affecting personal safety contributed to your getting shot and you could have always not joined the military or dodged the draft. Scam Bloggers could have not attended the schools they attended.

But are they really the same? Let’s review in the context of my original statement: People don’t listen. Therefore he who repeats his message most and loudest normally wins. As far as the drug game is concerned we tend to have less sympathy  for a middle class kid who gets caught up versus an inner city kid. Why? Because the middle class kid predominantly gets one message repeated over and over while the inner city kid must contrast that with the message that drugs are the only way to advance out of ones birth socio-economic class. Certain individuals in our society are also conditioned to believe that guns are empowering or that military service is a rite of passage. I am not aruing for against either…I am simply explaining how individuals you dismiss come to the decisions they make.

Now, do you think a year or two of repetitive messages from scambloggers can REALLY combat an entire lifetime of hearing on a daily basis that education is the way to a better life and that the Constitution (which rookies think has something to do with law school) is a good thing worth a read?

Think of scamblogging like a bombing campaign. Right now it’s using the old-school blanket methodology. Now you might believe predator drones are the way to go. That’s fine. You may believe the war is unwinnabke kr senseless. That’s fine too. Or hell you might believe in the otherside because it benefits you personally or you just want to see a bunch of soft sheltered kids ruining their lives. But don’t argue for less bombs. That’s just stupid.
