Just another WordPress weblog

Salty Cold Justice

Posted on June 23, 2010 by Erin Samus

So Benito every now and again adds another blog to the blog roll and one of them is called “Sweet Hot Justice.”  I decided to peruse the blog and what I found was…well I don’t know how to describe it.  It read like a bunch of excerpts from Lisa Scottoline novels, only more risque because it doesn’t have to appeal to the 55+ crowd that constitute 90% of Scottoline’s fans.

This post is NOT another rant about Lisa Scottoline, and it’s also not a call to arms for female attorneys.  I’m not even sure what this is.  So I suppose read on and we’ll find out together.

Sex sells and in the popular imagination nothing dominates like medical and legal dramas.  I read the post about how not to have sex with a hideous co-worker and the one about what to do when felt-up by your boss.  I wanted to comment on both, what was I supposed to say?  Sleep deprivation doesn’t cause people to sleep with trolls – low self-esteem does.  Also, am I really supposed to believe a fifth year associate at a major law firm doesn’t know what to do when she gets groped by her boss when any salaried employee at a workplace employing 15 or more knows within days of orientation?  I mean, obviously these entrees are fake, but come on, you expect this will get you a book deal?

I will say that I am concerned about the fate of our brightest female legal minds.  What does it say when the sexual orientation of the soon-to-be 4th woman ever to sit on the Supreme Court and the shopping habits of the third woman ever to sit on the court come into question more than their actual judicial philosophies.  What does it say when the brightest women in our field, and make no mistake Lisa Scottoline was one of the brightest women in her graduating class…feel that their best chance to make it big is to write cheesy romance novels disguised as legal fiction or in this case a legal blog?

Hang in there ladies. I mean, I don’t know what else to say
