My Not Quite JD
I’ll admit it. With my Law School transcript on the verge of expiring I am beginning to get jittery about just letting the damn thing expire. I worked my ass off my first year and though I don’t regret my decision to leave but when I made that decision I always knew I could just go back.
Then there’s the grades. I really WAS in the top 10% my first year and taking orders from associates who haven’t passed the bar and got worse grades is getting more and more tiresome. This goes out to all the under-employed student debtors struggling with whether to play it safe And keep struggling to make ends meet by eating a plate of shit served up by someone who didn’t pay their dues- or doing what you have to do to rectify the situation.
It makes even less sense to go back to get a JD now then it did when I left. Since I left tuition is way up and job prospects are way down. I am no longer the only paralegal with legal training. In fact several have JDs as does one of the 47 year-old secretaries who has four Kids and five first year associates..the groups’ average ages differ by less than 24 months.
I think the answer, at least for me is two fold. Deal with the daily humiliation of dealing with inferiors with bigger paychecks while working on a way out that has nothing to do with law – and find some way to finish my JD without spending a dime. Also, don’t let the two years left mislead you. Any lawyer/law student will tell you that finishing your first year is 80% of law school…even though it’s only 33% in real time.
When you’re backed into a corner all you’ve got is a shovel and a ladder.
